Main Principles of Sikhism


According to Sikh philosophy, God is One. His name is truth. He is the prevailing creator without fear, without enmity, immortal, unborn and self existent. He is the greatest and the bounteous. God has existed through ages and shall ever exist. He is free from birth or death. God has no temple no he has chosen people or nations. His abode is the conscience of having creatures. He is love. 

Sikhs will worship only God and no other deity. They will not set up idols, gods, goddesses, photos or statues for worship nor shall they worship any human being. 

A Sikh is expected to replace lust, anger, greed, pride and undue worldly attachment with their virtuous counterparts. Self Control, forgiveness, contentment, love for God and humility comes before going to the next step of doing active good.

Sikhs will not believe in castes, untouchability, magic, omens, amulets, astrology, ceremonial hair cutting, circumcision, fasts, frontal marks, sacred thread, graves and traditional death rites and rituals.

A Sikh has to give alms, donations and charity for noble causes.

A Sikh has to work hard, live by honest earnings and offer help to others. He is not to live of charity of others people or by misappropriating other’s earnings. A Sikh must never steal or gamble. A Sikh  must not involve in corruption. 

Sikhs are required to defend the weak, help the needy and stand for truth and justice even if it requires self sacrifice. 

Sikhism is a way of life or self discipline coupled with a belief in unity of God, equality of human beings, faith in Guru’s word and love for everybody.  

Women are equal to men in Sikhism. Women can visit the Gurudwara, conduct services, read the Holy Grant, lead the armies and enjoy all other rights as equal to men. They are not require to observe Parda (veil) and there is no restriction on their education or movements as long as they follow Guru’s instructions.

Use of opium, liqour, tobacco and all other intoxicant are prohibited to Sikhs.
